Fresh Cut Flowers in 2021: What’s new and trending in the floral industry?
Every day is a fantastic day to be surrounded by flowers. Whether they sit on your coffee table, as a centrepiece at your dinner parties, at your workstation or in your home-gardens, flowers remind us of the inherent beauty of life. They subtly make us more like them - effortlessly graceful and almost always blooming. With seasonal and perennial flowers always in the market, one could say they are ‘evergreen’.

There are so many unique flower species, varieties and sub-varieties that we would think they are almost always the same ones at your local florist. But floral design is an art and just like any other art form, subtle styles slip in and out of vogue - just like in the fashion world. These are often based on the collective state of mind and emotional sensibilities. While the same flowers are used, the way they are arranged and the overall character/personality are all dictated by these subtle styles. Colours in vogue also determine the popular shades that consumers like to include in their interiors/exteriors which are often thematic to begin with.
In recent years (thankfully), the term ‘sustainability’ has taken centre stage across most consumer markets. Individuals are keen to know where their flowers come from, how much of a carbon footprint their purchases have and whether ethical practices are followed in the supply chain. While the pressure isn’t yet the same as other fast moving consumer goods, it is bound to increase in the coming years and rightfully so. Just like other consumer categories, one thing that consumers will not compromise on is the quality of flowers. They expect their sustainably-grown flowers to look and smell their absolute best! We are happy to announce that we provide the best of both worlds - sustainably sourced flowers of only premium qualities. Even our supply chain has been designed to ensure negligible waste occurs at any given point.
Each season brings with itself a unique state of mind, a vibe and related themes. Combined with seasonal flowers, these make for some of the most breath-taking and attractive arrangements. For example, Spring sees a lot of abundant and brightly coloured floral arrangements with lots of greenery to signify the onset of a new fertile year. Fall and winter months see an increase in dried flowers like Craspedias and dried grass. Here’s a few of our favorite trends from The UK Flower Council this year. We hope to make your life bloom a little more with these. :)
The Human Touch
We need humanity now more than ever, in every sphere of life. The need for connectivity, familiarity and embracing our ‘human-ness’ is highlighted in the Human Touch. Warm colours, imperfect and organic shapes blended with soft textures dictate this category. Earthy tones like terracotta, nudes and browns combined with light & fresh colours like lilac and yellow set the tone for The Human Touch. Think bouquets of Champagne Chrysanthemums, Viper Carnations or Dewi Christel and Dewi Pink Floyd Delphiniums with Baby’s Breath or Eucalyptus in pastel nude vases of different shapes. Since the trend is inspired by humans, you can bank on organic shapes and matte textures with almost no prints and patterns for complementary elements.
Balanced Biotype
Understanding and implementing the balance in sustainability and profitability brings us to the Balanced Biotype. Balanced Biotype taps into the environmentally conscious, bio-based thematic by combining fresh, natural colours with more rough and rugged textures. With biodiversity taking center stage in this trend, bolder colour combinations and distinctive shapes come together with natural and industrial elements such as wood, cane, cement, etc. Think more greenery like Eucalyptus and Leather Ferns coupled with singular Calla Lilies and Craspedias in concrete or glass planters.
Recentered Stage
Like all things in life, we exist in paradoxes. While ‘Human Touch’ brought us closer to a collective connectedness and familiarity, Recentered Stage hones in on our individuality. Celebrating what makes us unique and ideal, the stories woven into our identities embody Recentered Stage. This style is all about colour blocking, geometric shapes and clear lines. Bold, contrasting colours with geometric shapes and strong patterns are highlighted here. Think uniquely shaped bouquets with Bizet Carnations or Cleo Alstroemerias determined by the vase type.
Crazy Illusions
The essence of Alice in Wonderland is perfectly captured in Crazy Illusions. Rapture and independence with a hint of crazy symbolize this highly playful style. In floral art, this translates perfectly to brightly coloured flowers. Our Eyeliner Spray Roses, Baccarat Carnations, Candy Floss Hydrangeas, Magical Triumph Hypericum and China Red Limonium with wild Ruscus Greenery are just some of the many examples of flora that is housed under Crazy Illusions. As the name suggests, we recommend you to go a little crazy with your arrangements. Go on, dive into the rabbit hole!
Everything said and done, we’d encourage you to experiment with flowers yourself. Tune in intuitively and find the combination that best captures your essence. You’ll be surprised at the work of art you come up with.
